Bespoke Site (Jekyll) + Github + Amazon AWS + Contentful
Leverage the scalability and blistering speed of AWS’s low-latency content distribution network with the beautifully designed
Contentful CMS for editing and maintaining your site. With the source code of the website hosted on a privately secured repository
on Github, you’ll have the ability to monitor and rollback changes, and any good web designer will be able to instantly pick up
where his predecessor left off. The elimination of budget web hosts using FTP-based server access massively increases security and
reliability without any additional cost*. SSL comes as standard on all pages, which is fast becoming a prerequisite for Google.
Static Site without CMS
Slow sites greatly increase the bounce rate of potential visitors and have a significant effect on your bottom line. That’s where
a static site without CMS really comes into its own. With no server-side processing or database calls to worry about, your site
will fly when compared to the average dynamic site. The fact that it’s built from the ground up means there won’t be any
to maintain. I recommend using Github pages or Amazon AWS to serve your pages for the ultimate in scalability, speed and security.
Static + Git + CDN: the golden trifecta of website zen. SSL also comes as standard.
Wordpress Site with Custom Theme
Although Wordpress comes with some widely acknowledged shortcomings, it’s still a very popular choice for companies and individuals
hoping to create a high-quality web presence on a budget, but approach is key. With the creation of a custom theme, the site can be
built to avoid the additional performance overheads usually associated with off-the-shelf themes and plugins. There are lots of
options for hosting which I can happily guide you through and as the internet changes, having a custom-built theme will mean it
might be necessary to perform occasional maintenance to keep it ticking over smoothly – I can of course help with this too.
Wordpress Site with Off-the-shelf Theme
After establishing the goals and objectives of your website, build time can be greatly reduced by using a third-party theme as a
starting point for the project. Opting for different degrees of customisation can greatly cut down on overall build cost and allow
resources to be poured into the content and positioning of your site. Although the cheapest option (most off-the-shelf themes cost
around $50), there are additional performance considerations to take into account and you might find that with a myriad of plugins
and theme files to update that it may be necessary to spend some time maintaining your investment. As far as I'm concerned
though, when compared to Drupal, Magento or Joomla, Wordpress is by far the better, more elegant choice.
When it comes to developing larger specialist sites, a consortium of tried and trusted professionals can be assembled to fill all
necessary creative and technical roles, with me heading up the project as creative and project manager. I prefer to use the very
best, proven, industry-leading technologies like NodeJS/ReactJS/AngularJS or Ruby on Rails. The product is built using an Agile
Development approach with issues tracked and contributions managed via version control. Working with me this way takes the uncertainty
out of recruiting a team for your project and allows you to harness the collective power of my network in Japan, Europe and North
America, while I take care of the overarching design concerns.
I've been hired for everything from creating a new suite of icons for an app or service, to full-colour illustrations, to
infographics, to many other things besides. If you want to talk to me about your next project or an idea you may have or an asset
you want producing, I'd be happy to hear from you. Sometimes it's good just to discuss a potential idea or get advice.
